Sat. 03 Feb 2024

There is a simple lucid clarity to Seán Keane’s singing voice which – like a laser – cuts through the cacophonous clatter and bang of a noisy world.  He is a storyteller, whose voice is the sound of everyman; as ancient history [simultaneously] as vital as a digital radio signal, winging its way across the heaven in search of new civilisations. Sometimes he can sound as lonely as an emigrant standing on the prow of a ship taking him away from his native homeland and more times he can sound like a cyber survivor, full of strength and valour that provides comfort to those who battle unequally with the hostile emotional.

Bluegrass from Nashville Tennessee

East Nash Grass

Bluegrass from Nashville Tennessee Wed.7th Feb 2024 at 8pm with “East Nash Grass” – Six Piece Band.

“Out of the Wilds of East Nashville came this band of ringers, each of them playing in National high profile Bluegrass bands. The sound they make when they play together rivals that of any of their main gigs. Who knows, but I heard them as a finely tuned machine that could survive on its own. The National high profilers better hang on tight! East Nash Grass is on the move.”

The rain at the end of the Summer

Sun 17th and Mon 18th March Banteer Drama Group present “The rain at the end of the Summer” by John B Keane

Declan Nerney

Declan Nerney - Sun 3 Mar 2024

Declan was born in the heart of Ireland in Drumlish Co Longford, at a unique period of time in the music scene worldwide. A revolution in rock and pop brought us The Beatles, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones, while here in Ireland the magnificent showband boom was about to explode.

A young man growing up at that time, Declan was being heavily influenced by these greats and indeed was getting the rare opportunity to see most of the top showbands appear in his native town of Drumlish. He would cajole his mother into seeing Joe Dolan, Big Tom, Philomena Begley, The Capital Showband, and many more perform when the appeared at the marquee at the end of May and early June. From his vantage point close to the stage, he would absorb every move made by the guitarist in the bands, watching his fingers slide along the strings, hoping that one day he might be up there performing just like Dan O’Hara or Seamus McMahon…

Brandon McPhee

Brandon McPhee - Sun 24 Mar 2024

It is just over 14 years since Brandon McPhee ventured his first notes on the button Box at his grandad’s Donald’s knee. A good listener and keen pupil, he was soon playing “The Dark Island” competently, a waltz which remains one of his favourites and globally most requested tunes.

Within a year of taking up the Button Accordion Brandon had begun his collection of competition trophies, beginning at the 2007 Caithness Music Festival, Lairg Music Festival, Royal National Mod Victories and followed by a variety of Junior Championships, then Senior national successes, culminating in winning the All Scotland Senior Traditional Accordion Solo Championship in 2014, the first time a Button Box Accordion won the title in 27 Years, one of only a hand selected few Button Accordionists to ever win the title in its history. Since then Brandon has focussed on developing his recording and stage-show career.

On a winter’s night in Westport Tony (Seamus O’Rourke) and Sheila (Joan Sheehy) sit in their wingback chairs sipping wine as the television flickers. After 40 years of marriage they find themselves at a somewhat mundane crossroads in their lives. With their children grown and gone, and their granddaughter a little too often underfoot, they’re left in a hinterland of life, pondering what to do next. The glow from the television offers little comfort or entertainment but between them both Tony and Sheila have plenty to say, even if they don’t always say the things that really matter.
Sheila dreams of travel and adventure, or even just a new lawnmower, but Tony’s penny pinching puts a damper on anything with a price tag. Instead, he wants to focus on his new diet; the one that will infamously “start on Monday”. The spark in their love life may have been extinguished over time, but their quick witted interactions are electrifying. And who’s to say that this isn’t just the beginning of something better for them both.
Written by Oisín Flores Sweeney, the action shifts seamlessly from hilarious one-liners to acute observations of Irish life. The Empty Nest wittily explores the realities of life and love for an everyday couple who are a little bit lost in the world.
O’Rourke and Sheehy’s performances capture the warts and all essence of a couple who have spent a lifetime together. Wholly relatable, this piece is intimate from the beginning. Geoff Gould’s direction keeps the pacing tight but natural, ensuring that the play maintains its momentum throughout its 50 minutes running time. The simple set offers an immediate depth, making the couple’s home feel as familiar as countless other living rooms across the country.
This wonderful little comedy is a perfect match of humour and heart, and definitely not just for
empty-nesters.
Contains strong language and adult themes.
